The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) is a medical school located at Pondicherry, the capital of the Union Territory of Puducherry, in India. JIPMER is an Institute of National Importance (INI) and a tertiary care referral hospital that is under the direct administrative control of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India with autonomy to run its internal administration.

JIPMER, spread over a campus of 195 acres (0.79 km2), has about 230 faculty, 360 resident physicians and over 3,000 nursing, administrative and support staff. Every year it admits 150 undergraduate students and 200 postgraduate student. The year 2019-20 saw over 24 lakh out patient visits, 3.5 lakh admissions, and 70,000 operations performed at JIPMER.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is a network of autonomous public medical colleges in India, established to provide high-quality medical education to aspiring students across the country.

Expansion of AIIMS

As of January 2022, five AIIMS were under development. In February 2022, the Ministry of Health announced that all 24 new AIIMS would be fully operational by February 2025. Upcoming AIIMS Colleges in India

In addition to the 20 existing AIIMS colleges, the government has announced plans to establish four new AIIMS institutes in the following locations:

Government’s Vision

The primary goal behind establishing new AIIMS branches is to create a balanced doctor-patient ratio, addressing the increasing healthcare demands of the population. The government is also focused on expanding the number of MBBS and postgraduate seats in these colleges to combat the shortage of medical professionals and enhance the quality of healthcare services across the country.

These efforts aim to strengthen India’s healthcare infrastructure and provide quality medical education to a broader audience.


Armed Forces Medical Colleges (AFMC)

Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune is a premier medical institute of India. The College is a Centre of Excellence for medical education and research. It was initially established in 1948 for postgraduate courses. The graduate wing for the MBBS course was started on 04 Aug 1962 with the aim of inducting medical graduates to the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). Presently the college provides training to under-graduate and post-graduate medical and nursing students with assured career prospects in the defence services.
